Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is now a global crisis that affects almost one-quarter of the world′s population. Its prevalence is rapidly rising, especially in the younger age group. Skin and MetS have myriad interactions. Physiological functions of the skin may grant a protective role, whereas cutaneous diseases may act as MetS initiators or amplifiers.

A number of cutaneous signs may be indicative of insulin resistance, the basic pathophysiology behind MetS. Skin changes are also prominent in type 2 diabetes mellitus, which is the consequence of MetS. Drugs used in dermatological disorders may cause metabolic dysfunction. Understanding the risk factors and taking early lifestyle interventions can delay or even prevent life-threatening complications. Dermatologists hold a unique position to predict and prevent MetS or its complications well before the patient visits a physician for systemic problems.
